UU.) en 1925 y se crio en Nueva York; a los 18 años fue reclutado para la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Viajero impenitente, vivió en México, Dinamarca, Inglaterra y California, hasta que en 1975 estableció su residencia en Irlanda. Se casó en 1954 y tiene dos hijos. Fue un fan muy activo desde la adolescencia y entró en el mundo editorial como dibujante, colaborando con Wallace Wood para EC Comics e ilustrando relatos para <I>Galaxy</I> y otras revistas de la época. <P align=justify> Publicó su primer relato de la mano de Damon Knight en 1951, y ya desde México, en 1957, estableció contacto con John W. Campbell. Pasó a convertirse en uno de sus colaboradores habituales y, pese a evidentes discrepancias ideológicas, su defensor más acérrimo. El mundo de la muerte (1960), y muy en particular la serie humorística  La rata de acero inoxidable , cuyo primer volumen se recopiló en 1961, lo consagraron rápidamente como uno de los autores más queridos del momento. <I>Bill, héroe galáctico</I> (1965), <I>¡Hagan sitio! ¡Hagan sitio!</I> (1966), <I>The Technicolor Time Machine</I> (1967), <I>A Transatlantic Tunnel</I>, <I>Hurrah!</I> (1972) y <I>Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers</I> (1973) son algunos puntales de un obra tan polifacética como seductora. <P align=justify> <I>¡Hagan sitio! ¡Hagan sitio!</I> fue llevada al cine en 1973 con el título de <I>Cuando el destino nos alcance</I> (<I>Soylent Green</I>) y, junto con <I>Bill, héroe galáctico</I>, considerada una obra maestra de la ciencia ficción humorística, es su novela más conocida. <P align=justify> Desde finales de la década de 1960 emprendió también una fecunda labor como antologista para el mercado británico. Se convirtió, con Brian W. Aldiss, en una de las voces críticas más activas del Reino Unido, y elaboraron conjuntamente una de las primeras recopilaciones de lo mejor del año:  Best SF .
